Services to Special Education Students During School Closures

Nye County School District is committed to meeting the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. With the outbreak of coronavirus, our schools have been closed causing disruptions in school services. We continue to seek guidance from the U.S. Department of Education and the Nevada Department of Education regarding services related to students with a disability. The district is responsible to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to our students that are eligible for special education services and have an individualized education program (IEP). At this time, all teachers, both general education and special education, are developing Learning From a Distance opportunities and will be contacting families to determine delivery methods to meet their needs. If this closure continues for an extended period of time, IEP teams will need to review the exceptional circumstances that affected individual students and make individual determinations as to whether compensatory services are needed under applicable standards and requirements. We will be working to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to learning from a distance opportunities and, to the greatest extent possible, provide their IEP and 504 services. 

During this school closure your child’s case manager should be reaching out to you to provide information and assist in answering questions or concerns. This will include rescheduling IEP meetings and, when possible, conducting them through electronic means. We will issue guidance to staff as it becomes available.
